So look to the much better remakes if you want to rock out to the amazing soundtrack without having to deal with frustrations from the originals. Ys IV: Mask of the Sun is a return to the glorious days bumping into enemies seen in the first two entries. In Mask of the Sun, however, the system is way less forgiving. So you will have to position yourself correctly if you want to avoid being forever lost in the land of Celceta. Talk about confusing!
But ROM hacks exist, so fear not. The story? And use the shield for protection, and unleash elemental spells that can be combined for maximum destruction.
Lost Kefin has often been seen as a step back for the entire series. But is it though? Well if you can play a translated version not really. The bump fighting system has been exponentially improved by allowing Adol to move in 8 directions.
The magic system now features long range spells that add a little bit of variety. Ys SEVEN changed the rules of the entire series in such a remarkable way, that modern entries are still based on it. Many times, apparently. Appearing for the first time is the party system, which allows you to control different characters coming with their own unique attack properties and special movesets.
The plot heavily revolves around a powerful item called the Mask of the Sun that can be used to absorb mysterious powers. Gameplay-wise, Memories of Celceta borrowed from Ys Seven and features multiple playable characters.
Fans are divided on Memories of Celceta. While the gameplay is generally praised, the outdated graphics and thin plot didn't please everyone. The gameplay was completely different, instead featuring 2D gameplay with a dedicated attack button. Issues like framerate drops and high difficulty kept it from being as acclaimed as the first two Ys games. It takes place one year after the end of Ys IV. While the plot is very basic, revolving around Adol and Dogi protecting the city of Felghana, the remake was a huge improvement upon the original game.
Extra cut scenes were added to expand the plot and add to the lore. It was released in on the Super Famicom. It has never received a remake or a western release. On top of that, the franchise took a long hiatus after the release of Ys V. Ys V is set a couple of years after Oath of Felghana. The plot revolves around exploring Xandria in order to find a lost desert kingdom called Kefin. One reason Ys V might be so forgotten is that it took so few risks.
It didn't really build upon the combat established in past Ys games, which were all experimental. Worse yet, some consider Ys V to be nothing more than a decent Zelda clone. Maybe someday Nihon Falcom will bless fans with a proper remake, much like the other early Ys games have received. Ys VIII was released in , and it's available on most modern platforms. It takes place shortly after Ys V Adol even starts the game with equipment from Kefin.
After a shipwreck, Adol finds himself stranded on the Isle of Seiren. He works with his allies to escape while helping the locals build a safe settlement. Players can switch between six playable characters who specialize in specific kinds of attacks.
Ys Origin was released in December It takes place years before the events of the first game, just following the separation of Ys from Esteria.
The two initial playable characters are Yunica Tovah and Hugo Fact. The two characters' stories play out somewhat differently during character interactions. Adol does not appear aside from being a hidden bonus character. Falcom has since released a new version of the game that required a copy's registration serial number sent to Falcom along with shipping charges to get an extra enhancement disc for the game. With this disc the player would be able to play as Adol, along with various other new features.
This is the first entry to feature the party system, which allows the player to switch between characters that accompany Adol Christin on his journey. In order to encourage the player to utilize this system, damage types were introduced: slash, pierce, and strike, Adol always being the player's first slash damage-dealer in their party.
The new party system was favorably received overall, but some fans complained about it forcing them to play as characters aside from Adol, the main protagonist. The latest entry of Ys Series that features a vast island to explore and additional gameplay features. It introduces the Flash Guard and Flash Move skill.
Another feature is the raid battle, quest, and character event for all of the casts. The gameplay is still the same however added two new attack attribute called "Shoot" and "Break".
The difference of the party system from the Ys Seven is that Adol can be removed and be placed as a reserve. Some hidden quest however will be given to players by talking to characters or by locating a place that may have a side story.
The elements of the story revolves from the history Ys' and destruction of an ancient civilization. The game received great game critic scores for its good gameplay.
However, its story features did not have the heavy elements seen on the Ys Seven. It will focus on the adventurers of Adol as he is falsely accused of an unusual disappearance and is now intermingled with the strange events occurring within the infamous Prison City and the monstrum. Many of these problems are associated with the game being quickly ported and released as Digicube was partially going out of business. Later, there was a compiled re-release, which bumped up Ys Eternal's visuals to Ys II Eternal's level more color depth, primarily and made the soundtrack sound more cohesive between the two.
Falcom complicated the issue by changing the "Eternal" to "Complete" on all external packaging and advertisements, but not in the actual games themselves. In one of the English patches, the internal bitmaps are edited to reflect the external change for the packages. The Virtual Console allows owners of the Nintendo Wii to download classic games. This marks the first release of the Ys series on a 7th Generation home console.
